We are bombarded with negative news: Brexit first, then the global pandemic and before we can recover, the War in Ukraine!

Our heads are filled with emotions. We are all tired of change and unpredictability. What unprecedented times we live in.

This weekend, I visited Christo from Ginkgo Flow at his “off grid, DIY therapy cabin”.

The movement/active massage was refreshing but even more stimulating was to witness the implementation of true simplicity of living, minimalism.

Would you prefer to be off the grid?

Because it was the opposite of our everyday, complicated living: noise, rush, tasks, driving, desk prison. But what is to be disconnected from the net?

Modern life can be difficult at times, and so many people around the world are choosing to start living a totally new way of life, an off-grid lifestyle.


Essentially, off-grid living means living on your own without being connected or dependent on urban infrastructure.

You’re generating your own electricity, using your own water source, and maybe even growing your own foodstuffs like fruit and veg.

But what are the benefits of health to this lifestyle?

  • Living a healthy life, away from pollution, noise, and stressful urban lifestyle. Stress level is significantly reduced.

  • Save a lot of money in the long run, because you’re not going to have any more energy bills now that you live off the grid and entirely on your own

  • Living in harmony with nature, and the planet.

  • Become more responsible, autonomous, and respectful of your planet.

  • Live in a quiet, natural place that’s stunningly beautiful.

  • Become self-sufficient because you live self-sustaining.

  • Contribute to a reduction in pollution

How does being close to nature affect your health? 

Being close to nature has profound effects on your health. We feel more grounded and in tune with the weather and the seasons. Living off the grid means people spend a lot more time outdoors, exposed to sunshine. This naturally regulates their melatonin levels and biological rhythms. Sleep is much better and consequently mental health.

Christo shared his personal story in such an authentic and compelling way, that it made me consider that there is a different angle. 

Stop and just take a moment to think…

Are you fulfilled? What is your purpose in life?

Do we really need all the possessions we own? When was the last time you used everything in the room around you?

So many of my patients are slaves to their jobs, financial commitments, and expectations. This makes them ill. No different to a mouse on a treadmill.

I am not suggesting that we should all live “off the grid” but challenging you to take stock of your priorities and consider what your lifestyle is doing to your health.


Take a break! Go for a walk, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, and turn off your mobile phone.

Take in your surroundings. Disconnect just for a few minutes…. Imagine what it would be like to do it for longer.
